Proper Culture: Watching Manchester United

The fulfillment of a long-held ambition: taking my kids to a Manchester United game. They've been to the stadium tour and museum before, but never a game. Mission accomplished.

On the way to the game we stopped by the Marcus Rashford mural in Withington. Rashford has been a great champion of important social issues in England. Famously, this mural was defaced with vile racist grafitti when he missed a penalty for England in a European Championship Final, only for the artist to restore the mural, which in turn was papered with hundreds of messages of support from a horrified public.

Many football clubs have statues of their icons outside their grounds these days, but I'm pretty sure United were the first - and the statue of The United Trinity (George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton) has never been bettered. I've photographed it on a number of occasions, from several angles, and it always maintains a certain gravitas.
